Sylff Research Abroad: Application Guidelines Partially Changed for 2nd Round of Applications Due September 30
Update. Jul. 22,2010
The Sylff Research Abroad was launched in April 2009. The program provides currently enrolled Sylff fellows with a fund of up to US$7,000 each to support a study abroad for up to three months. We are happy to report that more than a dozen Sylff fellows have benefitted from it by conducting in-depth research and interviews that they could not have done elsewhere to improve the quality of their academic dissertations. At the same time, we at the Tokyo Foundation have some concerns that at times the applicants do not seem to be fully knowledgeable about the rules of academic writings.
All studies are, in theory and in nature, built on the ideas and achievements of others. As you are aware, one of the most fundamental rules in academic writing is that words and ideas that were borrowed from other sources are to be appropriately acknowledged in the academic papers. It is expected that the Sylff fellows apply the same academic rules to Sylff Research Abroad applications, since the program supports the academic activities of Sylff fellows.
The Tokyo Foundation announces the following additional conditions for the Applications for the Sylff Research Abroad program in order to maintain the fair and highest level of academic practices in the Sylff community.
An application is accepted only when the following conditions are met:
1. The research proposal contains bibliography (works cited) from which the proposal borrows.
2. The research abstract and the proposal are submitted as a Word/RTF document or alternatively as a
PDF scan with OCR software.
The rest of the application conditions remain the same as before. For detailed information, please click here.
The next deadline for the Sylff Research Abroad is September 30, 2010. We look forward to receiving many applications.
