Leprosy Mission
Jadavpur University SYLFF Association
On Wednesday, 26th July, 2006 the JU-SYLFF Association organised an afternoon of entertainment for the patients at the Leprosy Mission, Kolkata. About 71 patients including the elderly, youth, and children attended the event.
The program started with some of the Fellows singing songs. Soon, some of the patients started humming with the singers. After that, the Fellows were joined by all the patients - and together they sang a Bengali song - which goes - “the drums are beating and the sky is full of joy…let’s all come and enjoy”. It was really an enthralling experience.
Later, the Fellows screened a movie - IQBAL. This is a movie that deals with how a young boy named Iqbal overcame his physical disability as well as poverty, and later represented India in Cricket. The movie is loaded with motivation and “Can Do” spirit. All the patients liked the movie and it was really touching to see them cheering the young hero who makes it to his goal despite his physical inability. The 3-hour programme ended with sweets being distributed among the patients. The SYLFF Fellows themselves handed these sweets to the patients.
This was a “very small” endeavour of the JU-SYLFF Fellows to serve the leprosy patients. The Fellows have plans to continue this in future, covering some more leprosy hospitals in Kolkata.
