Fellows in Action
Regional Forum
The SYLFF Asia/Pacific Regional Forum
The SYLFF Asia/Pacific Regional Forum, the third and final regional forum this year, was hosted by Jadavpur University in Kolkata, India, November 20th–22nd, 2007, and was participated in by 53 SYLFF fellows. As with the previous 2 forums, the theme was Human Rights and Creative Leadership.
In addition to participating in activities like those that were part of the North/South America and Africa/Europe forums, such as oral and poster presentations by participants and NAPSA (Networking and Programs for Social Action) workshops facilitated by members of the SYLFF Fellows Council (SFC), at this forum the participants had the opportunity to visit one of three local communities that have been home for particular categories of people who are still discriminated against by mainstream society: the Leprosy Mission, for leprosy patients; Vivek Chetana, for street children and women from slums; and Antaragram, for people afflicted by mental illness and other problems. The participants thus were able to extend the forum’s theme and their discussions to the real world and to think about present-day society.
Also, during the forum the following SYLFF fellows were elected to serve as new members of the SYLFF Fellows Council for 2007–2009: Duke Ghosh (Jadavpur University), and Songtao Wang (Inner Mongolia University).
The following articles are Alice Beban’s and Duke Ghosh’s observations regarding the forum, along with the text of Egla Martinez-Salazar’s keynote address at the forum.
The Scholarship Division wishes to take this opportunity to express its sincerest appreciation to our colleagues at Jadavpur University for hosting the event. Without their dedication, the event would not have been as successful as it was.
