Sylff Plus

Sylff Plus, a set of programs offered by the Foundation, aims to facilitate Sylff fellows’ academic advancement, leadership development and networking among one another. It consists of the following:

1. Sylff Research Abroad
All Sylff fellows who are currently enrolled in a doctoral program are eligible for Sylff Research Abroad (SRA). SRA awards support academic research related to their doctoral dissertation, conducted as a non-degree student at any institution of higher learning in a foreign country. The Tokyo Foundation provides a maximum of US$7,000 for each successful applicant.

2. Sylff Prize
The Sylff Prize recognizes and supports fellows who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to society.

We had 11 nominations in the year 2010. After careful review by an independent international selecting committee, and thorough discussions within the Tokyo Foundation concerning all of the nominees, we have decided that no Sylff Prize shall be awarded this time. All nominees were outstanding and demonstrated a wide range of accomplishments and abilities that deserve recognition, and, in many cases, the selection committee noted that they have high potential in the near future, and would like to see them again as they further develop themselves. Regardless of the result, we shall continue to explore and recognize outstanding individuals in the Sylff community. We dearly ask for and appreciate your support in this endeavor.

3. Sylff Website and Sylff Connect Ver. 2
This Sylff website is designed to encourage communication within the Sylff community and beyond. We welcome your contribution to “News” when you have news and achievements to announce and “Voices from the Sylff Community” when you have opinions and viewpoints that you wish to share. It is YOUR site! We are looking forward to uploading YOUR voices! Please contact us for inquiries and detailed information.

Sylff Connect is a social networking service (SNS) for all members of the Sylff community. In June 2011, we developed the second version of Sylff Connect that utilizes a Facebook Group page. The Sylff Group page is an exclusive membership site aiming to facilitate interactions among all members of the Sylff community. In order to use the Group page, you are kindly requested to become a member by clicking “Ask to Join Group” tag of this Group page; we will verify your status as a member of Sylff community (Sylff fellow or Sylff administrator) and register you as a member of the Group. Once you become a member you can view the Wall, and share and tag “like” on the Wall.

You will find the Group page at:

Sylff Connect Ver. 2

(The above site is accessible through Facebook’s search; Enter “Sylff” to find the group page.)

Although Facebook is globally used, it is not accessible in some countries. We are now considering whether we can provide an alternative SNS for those who fall into this category.

We hope you will utilize Sylff Plus to widen your experiences and extend your horizons outside the box!
