The program supports the education of graduate students with high potential for future leadership, and grants fellowships in 3 theme areas: environmental protection, political economy and fine arts. Ph.D. students receive $15,000 from the SYLFF endowment, a tuition waiver and a $7,000 assistantship from the Faculty of Graduate Studies, renewable for a maximum tenure of 3 years. MA students receive $7,000 from the SYLFF endowment, a tuition waiver and a $7,000 assistantship from the Faculty of Graduate Studies, renewable for a second year. Each year there are 5 or 6 MA and 5 or 6 Ph.D. student award holders. In 2006 the fellows formed a local association known as the York University SYLFF Fellows Association (YUSFA).
