Takako Kanai is a Ph.D. student at the Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University, specializing in youth empowerment through technical-vocational education and training (TVET) in Northern Mindanao, the Philippines. Her research focuses on how vocational training institutions and local governance have evolved in Northern Mindanao. By examining multiple actors involved in technical-vocational education—such as educators, local government officials, and youth beneficiaries—her study analyzes the practices and institutional dynamics that shape vocational training education in the region.
Prior to her doctoral studies, Takako conducted fieldwork and volunteer activities in Mindanao, engaging with local communities and education institutions such as TESDA and the Oro Youth Development Office. She holds a Master’s degree in Media and Governance from Keio University, and is currently a Sylff Fellow of the Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research.
