Dr. Angelov is a senior diplomat and a scholar of international relations. Since 2022 he has been appointed by the Bulgarian government as Consul General in New York, covering nine states in the Northeastern USA. In 2023 he was elected as Vice President for Europe I and member of the Executive board of the Society of Foreign Consuls in New York.
Before assuming his current position, Dr. Angelov was heading the Middle East and North Africa Department at the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2021-22) and serving in the Permanent Mission of Bulgaria to the UN in New York (2008-2020), occupying various positions, including Deputy Permanent Representative. He joined the foreign service of Bulgaria in 2006.
Dr. Angelov has extensive expertise in multilateral diplomacy and area studies (the Middle East, the Balkans, and Eastern Europe). His professional background includes over two decades of university teaching in Europe and North America, training for diplomats, management of academic projects, and journalism.
He has PhD in Political Science (Sofia University) and postgraduate degrees from the University of Geneva (Master in Advance Studies in International and European Security); the University of Bologna MA in Politics and Administration); and the University of Athens (Southeast European Studies). His academic fellowships include a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University, a Jean Monnet Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, a Marie-Curie Pre-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Kent, etc. Dr. Angelov has over 40 academic and media publications and has participated in over a hundred academic conferences.
