Bhavya Gupta is pursuing PhD in the discipline of International Organisation from the Centre for International Politics, Organisation and Disarmament (CIPOD) in the School of International Studies (SIS) at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), India.
Her doctoral research critically examines the persistent challenges that the International Criminal Court (ICC) faces in investigating and prosecuting sexual and gender-based crimes against women. This interdisciplinary study examines the ICC's mechanisms for investigating and prosecuting gender-based crimes, evaluating its functions as a court and a bureaucracy.
The analysis is framed through a feminist lens, exploring its processes within the contexts of international criminal law and international organizations.
Before pursuing PhD, Bhavya earned her Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Human Rights Law from the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore and worked as an Assistant Professor of Law for more than seven years. Her key interest areas intersect Public International Law, Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law and Constitutional Law.
She also has considerable research experience as a feminist researcher. Bhavya has worked on India's labor codes to examine women's rights in gig work as a legal consultant on a project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for Women’s Economic Empowerment. She has also conducted several workshops for raising gender sensitization and legal awareness in different parts of India. As a Research Fellow at the National Law University of Delhi, she collaborated on several projects relating to women, including with the National Commission of Women, the Department of Justice and the Ministry of External Affairs.
