Soumya Bhowmick is a Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF). He completed industry endorsed Ph.D. studies at BML Munjal University as a SYLFF Research Grantee (Tokyo Foundation), focusing on inclusive wealth in South Asian economies. He holds a double master’s degree in economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and the University of Antwerp, Belgium (specialising in Globalisation Economics and European Integration). He was previously awarded the Government of Japan’s JASSO Scholarship, the Tokyo Foundation’s SYLFF M.A. Fellowship, and the European Commission’s EMJMD Fellowship.

Soumya Bhowmick has almost a decade of experience in policy research and has participated in various national and international conferences. Soumya has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals and is a regular contributor to digital and print platforms like The Hindu Business Line, Economic and Political Weekly, The Diplomat, Council on Foreign Relations, The Telegraph, Firstpost, Dhaka Tribune, East Asia Forum, Fortune India, The Quint, and India Today, among others.
Brief Summary of Support Program Activities
Supported by the SYLFF Research Grant, Soumya Bhowmick’s doctoral project at BML Munjal University developed India’s first Subnational Inclusive Wealth Index (IWI), moving beyond GDP by integrating physical, human, and natural capital. The grant enabled a UNEP field visit to refine methods, apply PCA for indicator weighting, and produce state-wise IWI scores that revealed sharp regional disparities and the undervaluation of natural capital. Visual maps and regression analyses linked higher IWI to stronger income, FDI, and SDG progress, while publications and outreach expanded the project’s policy relevance. The initiative laid the foundation for a sustained research agenda on inclusive and sustainable development.
