Debangi Sanyal completed her undergraduate degree in Sociology from Jadavpur University in 2023. Currently, she is pursuing her Master’s at Jadavpur University. Debangi’s participation in various competitions and programs in traditional dance institutions and contemporary performance spaces developed her curiosity to explore the intricacies of cultural differences in these settings. As an MA JU-SYLFF Fellow starting in August 2024, she finally got the opportunity to do an intensive study in her field of interest. Her project, titled "Echoes of the Natyashastra: Bharatnrithriyam’s Improvisational Resonance in Contemporary India," focuses on exploring the historical and cultural significance of Bharatnrithyam (a variety of Bharatnatyam), and how traditional and contemporary practices intersect and influence each other, highlighting shifts in cultural expression and societal values. Debangi's interests include child sociology, juvenile justice, and performance studies. She aspires to conduct her doctoral research on the rights of children in conflict with law. She has interned with Child Rights and You (CRY), teaching primary education to underprivileged children in Tangra, Kolkata. Additionally, she has worked as the Campaign Leader for Teach for India at Jadavpur University and has served as the Convenor of Jadavpur University Dance Forum (2022-2023), demonstrating her leadership skills coupled with strategic thinking. When not immersed in her research, Debangi can be found practicing dance, diving into graphic design projects, and exploring documentaries on crime, or mysterious cases. Her hobbies also include cooking and savouring a well-prepared meal, combining her love for culinary arts with her appreciation for rich, cultural experiences.
