Magdalena Solarek-Gliniewicz started her PhD position at the University of Oslo in November 2020 and she joined the MultiLing centre of excellence there and became a member of Nor-Pol project. She submitted her dissertation "Strategies to establish shared understanding in medical consultations in a second language. A study of conversations between Polish doctors and Norwegian patients" in March 2024. Since then she has been working as completion grant holder at the same university.
Academic Interests:
Her PhD project focused on communication between Polish doctors with Norwegian as a second language, and Norwegian patients with Norwegian as a first language. In the dissertation she focused on: 1) communication challenges the doctors encounter after moving to Norway and starting working in Norwegian hospitals, 2) grammar anomalies used by physicians and how they influence common understanding with patients and 3) use of medical terminology during consultations and strategies to establish shared understanding of medical jargon. Data material for the study consisted of: 1) semi-informal research interviews with physicians and 2) recordings of doctor-patient-consultations from several Norwegian hospitals. As theoretical framework in her study she used repair and recipient design, and as analytical framework she used thematic analysis and conversation analysis.
Magdalena earned her Master’s degree in Norwegian Language Studies at the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznan, Poland and continued her education in Polish-Norwegian Interpretations in Public Sector at OsloMet, Oslo, Norway. After her studies, she taught Norwegian on intensive courses for health personnel and worked as a lector of Norwegian at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw. In addition she has worked as a Polish-Norwegian interpreter at Oslo University Hospital.
