Ernesto Deus has devoted most of his recent career to scientific research and lecturing. He has been involved in different research projects with a particular focus on the ecology and impacts of eucalypts in the introduced range, authoring several scientific papers in this topic. He was the guest editor of a special issue devoted to eucalypt ecology in the journal Forests. He is a prescribed fire technician and an invited adjunct professor in the Agriculture School of Coimbra, lecturing curricular units related to fire use.
