Taniya Chakrabarty, is a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology, from the Centre for Study of Social Systems, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her research interests include elite sociology, sociology of education, sociology of business, merit, labour, and inequality. At present, her dissertation attempts to understand whether or not a social story exists behind an otherwise mechanically understood hiring process in the corporate sector. Through a focus on campus placements, this study attempts to explore the process of merit construction and elite reproduction in elite educational institutions and corporate economy and to probe if and how identities shape the career path of individuals seeking high-status professional jobs in the corporate economy.
