Dear friends of the Tokyo Foundation,

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the holiday season in the company of family and friends. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my gratitude once again for your warm and generous sympathy and support in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The disaster and nuclear crisis have caused serious and widespread disruptions to Japanese society in 2011 and have forced us to reflect on how best to advance the reconstruction effort and chart the nation’s future. They have also prompted us to take a step back and reexamine our core social values. While overshadowed by the disaster, other issues—political, economic, environmental, and financial—too, call out for urgent action.

Through our policy research and leadership development activities, in 2012 we will continue offering fresh insights into Japanese society that contribute to bringing about positive change for all.

Wishing you peace, health, and happiness during the holidays and best wishes for the New Year.

Hideki Kato

President, Tokyo Foundation
